Bumbo Baby Seat Recall: Infants Falling Out and Fracturing Skull

This Wednesday, 4 million Bumbo baby seats were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. According to their spokesperson, Scott Wolfson, it poses an extreme product hazard. There have been 84 different reports of children who have been injured as a result of these seats after falling, and 20 of those injuries resulted in skull fractures. This isn’t the first time the public has experienced a recall of foam type seats for babies. Just five years ago, 1 million seats of a similar make were recalled due to accidents and children falling.

The manufacturer, Bumbo International, is located in South Africa. They reported that they would create a special strap or buckle to help secure the children in their seats to prevent the danger of falling. This wasn’t enough for the Safety Commission who has the authority to pull a mass recall in the U.S. for safety hazards. They claimed that because this seat was neither a walker nor an infant carrier, it technically didn’t fall into standards either federal or industrial. This posed a big problem, and the recall was the best option for the future safety of other children. USA Today reports that Bumbo has asked all of the owners to stop using the seats at once and contact their hotline for an emergency repair kit which includes safety straps to hold the children in.
